About Fighting Blindness
Fighting Blindness is an Irish charity funding world-leading research into treatments and cures for blindness. It also provides a unique professional counselling service for people with visual impairments and their families.
Patients Leading Research
Fighting Blindness started out in 1983 as a group of families affected by blindness getting together for support. This group of patients, who had no scientific background, knew that their only hope for a cure lay in developing research. From humble beginnings, this group developed strong partnerships around Ireland.
Today, Fighting Blindness is a global leader in vision research bringing hope to millions of people losing their sight. Around 65,000 children and adults in Ireland and 40 million worldwide have degenerative eye conditions that can lead to blindness.
What your sponsorship money will fund
Fighting Blindness research teams are investigating treatments and cures for blindness caused by inherited and age-related conditions including Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). We fund 12 projects in 6 centres around Ireland and one in the UK.
Funds raised from the Glendalough Trail will help to continue and advance this research bringing us closer to the goal Fighting Blindness set 30 years ago – to find a cure for blindness.
Funds raised will also help run the Insight Counselling Centre, a professional counselling service for individuals and families affected by blinding conditions.
